The Derrick Club Indoor Tennis Centre

NOW OPEN

The Derrick Golf and Winter Club provides a wide variety of social and athletics programs for the whole family, and we want to keep building on that. Indoor tennis is included in athletic memberships.

In 2019, club members and the Board approved a state-of-the-art, four-court indoor tennis centre. Although COVID-19 has slowed the construction start date, the project is still moved. We know how sought after indoor court time is, and our careful planning, designing, and financial management has brought this exciting development to life!

Welcome Marvin Hinds, Tennis Director!

Marvin was born in Guyana, South America. His love of tennis began at age 9. He achieved his International Tennis Federation Level 1 Coaching Certification at age 15.

In 2001, Marvin and his family moved to Edmonton to attend the University of Alberta and Co-Captain for the Golden Bears Tennis Team. Marvin has been a Tennis Professional at the Saville Sports Centre and the Royal Glenora Club.

A strong believer of continuous learning, Marvin has taken the appropriate steps to complete Canada’s Coach 3 certification program and the Advanced Coaching Diploma program.

While coaching at the Royal Glenora Club, Marvin helped establish the progressive tennis system, oversaw development of players in the Next Gen, Jr Performance and Men’s and Women’s Tournament Prep streams. He organized tournaments and box leagues to introduce participants to others at a similar age/level. These match play opportunities helped bridge the gap between recreational and competitive players at the club.

His experiences as a tennis player and coach have taught him the value of building relationships, as Tennis Director he will look to bring the “Tennis For Life” model and love of the tennis to the Derrick Club.

Construction is well under way! We are currently preparing the subgrade of the new tennis courts. That area will be paved before the metal building is erected in late October.

This will cause some disruption. The good news is that the timing is perfect as golf season will be ending and there will be less demand for parking.

Thank you for your patience during construction. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to [email protected].

We are excited to bring you our first update on the status of the indoor tennis facility. The Board approved the restart of the indoor tennis courts on January 26, 2021. An Indoor Tennis Construction Committee has been developed to assist in the Delivery of this Capital Construction Project consisting of our General Manager Jim Hope, 3 Board Members, and 2 Members at Large with Construction Backgrounds.

Following a competitive Request For Proposal process to select a General Contractor, the Committee selected Carlson Construction and have awarded a Fixed-Price contract. The Carlson Team has extensive experience working on similar projects at other Private Clubs and successfully completed the Derrick Badminton Facility in 2014. They understand the club and have always provided a great result with a keen eye on the budget and schedule.

Redefining Tennis in Edmonton

The playing surface for the new tennis courts will be plexicushion. This is a very popular surface favoured by a number of private clubs because it is considered less jarring on players body and less stressful on joints. Derrick Club members will be able to challenge their friends and family on the same playing surface the pros use at the Australian Open.

A top of the line indirect LED lighting system will enhance the players’ experience throughout the facility.

More for Members

The Derrick Club is expanding the athletics program with an all-new indoor tennis centre! The centre will have four indoor tennis courts with plexicushion surface and a variety of programs for all levels. The design and budget are approved and the centre is ready for development.

Athletic members have full access to the courts and online booking will be available.
